SQL Server cannot process this media family

Problem:

You are getting the error message shown below while trying to restore a database.

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The media family on device 'C:\ysatech\db\MyDB.bak' is incorrectly formed.

SQL Server cannot process this media family.
RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3241)

Solution:

Make sure that you are not restoring the backup from SQL 2008 to SQL 2005 instance.

    I also had the same error 3241 with SQL, but after stopping the restore it disappeared, thanks.

    I was having some what similar issue and I solved it.  I was trying restore with SQL Server 2008 DB.

    I have documented each step, which help me to resolve this problem.

    I am getting this error as well. Confirmed both versions, and they are 10.0.1600, but noticed the remote server is x64. So you cannot restore a DB from an X64 server onto an x86 server, even if both are sql2008?

    I'm still getting the message even though im not restoring the backup from 2008. What else can i do?
